Through the ElevateEd initiative, the Sam Farquah Foundation and Orphanage is actively contributing to advance the quality of public primary and secondary education in rural communities lacking basic socioeconomic infrastructure across Patani Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State, Nigeria. In collaboration with stakeholders, we are championing the value of education as a transformative force for children, youths and the community as a whole. Through a range of strategic initiatives such as the Public Primary School Spelling Competition, Education Conference, Teachers Training, and Scholarship Programs for secondary and post-secondary students, we are fostering awareness, building capacity, and opening doors to opportunities.
In these communities, children and youths attend public primary and secondary schools in poor conditions. Most learners do not have desks and chairs in their classrooms and lack access to basic learning resources such as textbooks, notebooks, pens, and pencils. Some classrooms lack chalkboards in good condition for teachers to use. Most schools lack restrooms and access to clean water. In general, schools in the rural communities of Patani LGA lack technology such as laptops and tablets. This leaves learners without the tools they need to succeed. These communities are also affected by flooding almost every year, which may damage the poor infrastructure, and disrupt the academic calendar. As a result, students may not be able to attend school, further widening the educational gap. The severity of these conditions has led to widespread reluctance among teachers to work in these areas. This contributes to a persistent shortage of qualified educators and a high attrition rate, deepening the crisis and limiting the potential of the next generation.
The Foundation's Apprenticeship to Entrepreneurship Roadmap is a multi-year comprehensive training initiative designed to equip youths with the education, practical skills, and hands-on experience needed to successfully learn a trade and build a sustainable livelihood. Graduates of the program are empowered not only to become skilled professionals but to establish their own workshops and become employers of labor - breaking cycles of poverty and contributing to their community.
To ensure success, the Foundation provides robust financial support. Each apprentice receives a monthly stipend, and all training expenses, including personal protective equipment, are fully covered. We also respond to emergent needs with additional support, ensuring that no apprentice is forced to abandon their journey due to hardship. Upon the successful completion of their apprenticeship, each graduate receives a starter kit to support them in launching their trade with confidence. Beyond financial aid, the Foundation offers consistent social and moral support. Our team closely monitors the progress and attendance of apprentices, engages regularly with trainers, and visits workshops almost daily to provide mentorship and resolve challenges. This hands-on approach fosters accountability, encouragement, and a strong sense of community throughout the program.
Through the Foundation's Bridge of Care Initiative, we uplift individuals and families experiencing financial hardship. We provide essential support, including, food supplies, financial assistance, and clothing to those in need, offering immediate relief and restoring dignity in times of crisis. Our programs are tailored to address the unique circumstances of the individuals and families we serve, with the ultimate goal of helping them to become self-reliant and productive members of society. Each success story is a testament to the transformative power of our programs and the dedication of our team and supporters.
